What a smart cat litter box costs to make in China
Built from 28 public listings on Made-in-China (retrieved 2026-10-30) and 38 US retail listings (retrieved 2026-11-01). Every figure below is a published price from a linked listing; nothing here is estimated.
The short answer
Median factory price is $107.00 per unit. The 18 listings that claim automatic cleaning without putting an app in the title quote a median of $113.50; the 9 that do put app, WiFi or Tuya in the title quote $106.70. Connectivity is not what the factory is charging for here. What the titles leave out — drum volume, waste-bin volume, how many independent safety sensors the unit carries — is where the 15x spread inside one class actually lives.
Factory price by tier
| Spec tier | Listings | Middle half (p25–p75) | Median | Full range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Automatic cleaning, sensor control only | 18 | $97.97 – $138.05 | $113.50 | $36.50 – $560.00 |
| e.g. Extra Wide Entry Smart Plastic Self Cleaning CatLitterBox — $109.00 at 10 Pieces · listing | ||||
| App / WiFi / Tuya control in the title | 9 | $83.25 – $144.75 | $106.70 | $62.00 – $173.50 |
| e.g. Manufacture Wholesale Automatic CatLitterBoxSmart APP Control — $104.50 at 10 Pieces · listing | ||||
Tiers are assigned by what the listing title states, not by a supplier's own claim. Only one listing in the sample puts stainless steel in the title, so that tier is not shown. Consumables, mats, ramps, liners, enclosures and litter are excluded.
Why two quotes for the same box are not comparable
Inside one product class, on one marketplace, on the same day, the cheapest listing sits at $36.50 per unit and the dearest at $560.00. 2 listings are excluded from every figure above because they quote a price per kilogram or per set rather than per unit ($3,500.00–$5,800.00 per set; $3.94 per kg). Quantity does not explain it either: listings at 100 pieces or fewer quote a median of $107.00 (23 listings), the 101–1,000 piece band $136.70 (5) — no consistent volume effect in this sample.
| Spec tier | Cheapest | Median | Dearest | Spread |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Automatic cleaning, sensor control only | $36.50 | $113.50 | $560.00 | 15× |
| App / WiFi / Tuya control in the title | $62.00 | $106.70 | $173.50 | 3× |
A listing title is not a specification. “Large capacity”, “anti-pinch” and “smart” are claims a listing makes about itself; the audit is what measures the drum, counts the sensors and reads the motor plate against the price.

38 US retail listings in the sample; the middle half runs $129.99–$318.63, median $191.25. The multiple above is retail median divided by factory median, blended across tiers. It is the thinnest multiple on this site, and the product explains it: a motorised drum ships in a carton the size of a small appliance, and what comes back damaged comes back at the seller's cost. The pot is smaller because more of it is spent before the unit reaches a shelf.
Getting from factory price to landed cost
Four numbers decide it, and only the first is in the quote you were sent:
- Factory unit price at your actual quantity, not the MOQ price. The MOQ in this sample runs from 1 piece to 648 pieces, so the sheet you are quoted from matters as much as the number on it.
- Freight per unit — volumetric weight, not scale weight. An assembled drum is mostly air, and carriers charge for the air.
- Duty and fees at your HS code and your country's rate, plus broker and bond; if a spare or the unit ships with a lithium cell, the battery paperwork belongs on this line too.
- Defect and returns allowance — a motorised box with sensors and a gearbox fails at a rate you should price in, not discover.
A quote can look cheap on line 1 and lose on lines 2 to 4. That is the gap a supply chain looks for, and it cannot be read off a price list.
Five things to ask before you accept the number
- What is the price at 100, 300 and 500 pieces — in writing, on one sheet?
- What is the drum volume and the waste-bin volume in litres, measured — not “large capacity”?
- How many independent safety sensors are in the unit, and what exactly stops the drum with a cat inside? Ask to see the test, not the word “anti-pinch”.
- Which motor and gearbox, how many rated cycles, and what is the noise level in dB at one metre?
- What is the carton dimension and gross weight per unit, and what is the defect rate on the last three production runs?
One more, asked after the price: is the app white-label Tuya / SmartLife or the factory's own server? It decides who fixes it, and for how long, after the purchase order closes.
